AARP Tax-Aide of the Mid-Shore

The AARP Tax-Aide of the Mid-Shore is a free, volunteer run tax assistance service, offering assistance with federal and state tax preparation to low- and moderate-income taxpayers, with specific emphasis on helping older adults. The program operates each year, from February 1st through April 15th, in locations throughout Kent, Caroline, Queen Annes and Talbot counties.

Facilitators (Greeters) are responsible for welcoming taxpayers at on-site locations (Kent County locations include the Community Center in Worton, and the Amy Lynn Ferris Senior Center in Chestertown). The Facilitator will help the taxpayer feel welcome and at ease by greeting them, helping them to gather and organize their paperwork, describing the tax preparation process, and assigning each taxpayer to a Tax Counselor.

Tax Counselors will help prepare and file taxpayers’ returns online, identifying deductions they may have been unaware of and calculating refunds for which they may be eligible. Volunteers help by relieving the taxpayer’s stress of doing their own taxes or the burden of having to pay for tax preparation fees. Prior tax experience, while helpful, is not necessary. Extensive training is provided (some in person and some virtual). Volunteers are IRS certified after successfully completing training and passing required exam(s).
